PCOR Partnership Phase III

The Plains CO2 Reduction (PCOR) Partnership, led by the Energy & Environmental Research Center, is one of seven regional partnerships established in 2003 by the U.S. Department of Energy National Energy Technology Laboratory to assess and develop carbon storage opportunities. The PCOR Partnership region covers an area of over 3.6 million square kilometers in the central interior of North America and includes all or parts of nine U.S. states and four Canadian provinces. The PCOR Partnership is characterizing the regions stationary CO2 sources and sinks and evaluating the efficacy of CO2 capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) in its region. Now in its demonstration phase, the PCOR Partnership has teamed with industrial partners to conduct two commercial-scale (greater than 1 million tons a year) CCUS projects in its region. In the Fort Nelson project, the PCOR Partnership has teamed with Spectra Energy Transmission to demonstrate CO2 storage in a saline formation in British Columbia, Canada. In the Bell Creek project, the PCOR Partnership is working with Denbury Onshore LLC to combine CCUS with enhanced oil recovery in the Bell Creek oil field in Montana, USA. In addition to the two commercial-scale demonstration projects, the PCOR Partnership continues to characterize CO2 sources and potential sinks throughout its region as well as actively engage regulators and policy makers and conduct public outreach activities on a local, regional, national, and international scale.
