Aquistore: Demonstrating Carbon Storage

The Aquistore Project adjacent to the Boundary Dam Power Station west of Estevan, Saskatchewan, is an innovative greenhouse gas storage effort to address concerns about climate change: Carbon dioxide (CO2) is produced by the six units at the Boundary Dam Power Station when coal is burned to make electricity. The CO2 from Unit 3 is captured instead of being released into the atmosphere. The CO2 separated from the exhaust gases at Unit 3 travels through a 3-kilometer (2-mile) pipeline to the Aquistore site, where it is injected into a deep sandstone rock formation. The injected CO2 will remain trapped (sequestered) in the underground zone for millions of years. The injected CO2 will be monitored to ensure that it remains securely stored. This entire process is called carbon capture and storage, or CCS.
